Actually, I never liked Borland myself. (Not that
I DID like MS compilers either!) My first C
compiler was Borland C/C++ 3.1. I knew nothing
about Windows programming at that time so I have
no idea how the Window performence was. While
the compile times were extremly quick, even on the
386, the code that it put out was both slow and
buggy! I tried turning on 'optimization' with
all sorts of apps although optimization never
actually seemed to increase the execution speed.
Once I got DJGPP, I was amazed. It took the thing
a year to compile (with a 386, remember?) my
programs but they would often run 200% faster than
when compiled with Borland. With Borland, I ended
up for the most part writing exclusivly in ASM
because the speed was so pathetic. I won't even
mention the un-explainable crashes in my own
programs... ?? :)
Today I am attempting to use GCC (the compiler in
DJGPP) with Windows. Unfortunatly, because of
Microsoft's horrible ANSI-C-incompatible header
files, I'm stuck patching here/there fixing their
mistakes. (Most of them are one liner errors)
Errgh, why don't they (Microsoft) just, umm,
die or something.
